Revision of minimum wages: Effective implementation needed

Revision of wages for labourers of the State has been made which was pending for several years. The government has fixed minimum wages for the labourers working in 33 different sectors. According to the decision, now the unskilled labourer would be given Rs 3070 per month and Rs 118 per day. Semi- skilled worker would be given Rs 3,200 per month and Rs 123 per day and for skilled worker the wage has been fixed at Rs 3,350 per month and Rs 129 per day. After 1997 the wage revision has been fixed in different sectors like cotton, gining, forest and road-related works, engineering, irrigation, saw mills, pulse mills, oil mills, shops, hotels etc. Wage revision of agriculture labourers has been made after 1989 and they would be given Rs 85 per day. The government first time has fixed wages for the employees of private educational institutions, private hospitals, pathology labs etc. Wages of labourers in these sectors had not been fixed till date and the labourers had to work at low wages. Now, they would be able to live their lives in a better and secure way. It is a good initiative of the government. But, at present seeing the hike in prices of daily items, it needs to be assessed whether the fixed wages are sufficient or not. If annual increment system is implemented in wage revision then it would give better results. The labourers can get benefit if wage revision is made in a due course and it should be fixed. Now, it also becomes the duty of the government and administration to ensure that the labourers get the revised wages and effective steps are required for its implementation.
