Bhopal, Apr 30:
Improvement of main canal of Chambal canal system at 571th kilometre and branch and sub-branch canals at 2620th kilometre would be undertaken at a cost of Rs 425 crore under Madhya Pradesh Water Restructuring Project. It would bring 2.73 lakh hectare area of 756 villages in Morena, Bhind and Sheopur districts under irrigation and would lead to considerable increase in Rabi and Kharif yields.
Chambal Valley Project is a joint venture of Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan governments. Gandhi Sagar Dam has been built in Madhya Pradesh while Maharana Pratap Sagar Dam, Jawahar Sagar Dam and Kota Barrage have been constructed in Rajasthan. For irrigation purpose, Chambal left and Chambal right canals emanate from Kota Barrage. The left canal irrigates only Rajasthan areas while the right canal enters Parvati aqueduct after irrigating Rajasthan areas during its 124 kilometre course in that state. Madhya Pradesh is extending 75 share in the improvement of this canal also.
Chambal right canal starts to flow in Madhya Pradesh from Parvati aqueduct and its length is 179 kilometres. This canal bifurcates at Sunehra head near Sabalgarh. Ambah branch canal emanates from its left side which is 171 kilometre long. The right canal emanating from Sunehra head is called lower main canal which is 53 kilometre long. From the last leg of this canal emanates Morena branch canal whose length is 38 kilometre. At the fag end of lower main canal water gushes into Asan drop through Asan river which later reaches Bhind main canal through Kotwal and Pilaula reservoirs. Bhind main canal is 82 kilometre long while the length of Mau branch canal is 48 kilometre.
