New Delhi, Apr 25:
Judicial custody of arms dealer Suresh Nanda, his son Sanjeev and two other accused in a case of manipulating evidence on alleged kickbacks received in defence deals was on Friday extended till May 9 by a special CBI court.
Additional Sessions Judge I K Kochhar sent all the four accused to jail for another 14 days after they were produced before it on the expiry of their judicial custody.
Nandas, their chartered accountant Bipin Shah and Income Tax deputy director (investigation) Ashutosh Verma were arrested from a Mumbai five-star hotel on March eight.
Bail applications of all the accused are pending in the Delhi High Court after the trail court, on April five, had rejected their plea on the ground that they could hamper the on-going probe into the case.
The CBI, which allegedly recovered Rs 55 lakh from Shah's residence after their arrest, accused Nanda of bribing the IRS officer to manipulate income tax records. It also claimed to have recorded 94 telephonic calls among the accused in this matter.
Nanda has been under the CBI scanner for allegedly receiving kickbacks in the Rs 1,150 crore Barak missiles system and Armoured Recovery Vehicles deal.
According to the CBI, Suresh Nanda, accused of receiving kickbacks to the tune of Rs 400 crores in certain defence deals, connived with his son and chartered accountant to influence Verma, the IRS officer who had once raided Nandas' premises to gather evidence on non-filing of IT returns.
