Family, career, social service - Women are rolled into one

Bhopal Today Team

Bhopal, Apr 25: We have a unique culture in our country. Our women's role in all fields is commendable. History tells us that when a woman has taken up a job, she did it with all honesty and sincerity. Perhaps there is no field where the women have not tried their hands. Jhansi ki Rani, Sarojini Naidu, and Indira Gandhi are some of the names that shine in our history for their extraordinary role in life. Sirimavo Bhandaranayake, Chandrika Kumar Tunga (both Sri Lanka), Golda Mayer (Israel), Margaret Thatcher (England) are some other names who did great service to the world.

Barkha Dutt, Kiran Bedi, Padmavati, Kiran Mazumdar, Indira Nui, Condalisa Rice, Anjola Markel, Sunita Narayan, Deepa Mehta, are some of the names who are still doing great service to the society and created a separate identity for themselves. Today, women could be seen in all sections of the society forbidden for them earlier- police, defence, aeronautics. You name the field, women are there with men. They have a load of work to do, at home and outside.

There are some women who could have got a good career and become famous. But they decided to take up the social problems to work with. There are others who are known for their excellent work at home, career and social service. Deepali Mehta of Hyderabad is one woman. A successful industrialist, Ms Mehta took up the cause of the poor women and she is working on the work plan for their betterment. The DM Women Power Project has helped several poor women with employment so far.

Kiran Bedi is known for her work open statements. Whatever work she has taken up, she has put her stamp on them. Her work to reform the prisoners of Tihar Jail and improvement in traffic are only two examples.

Like Kiran Bedi, there are several other women who have impressed a lot. In Madhya Pradesh, several women sarpanchas were instrumental in developmental works like digging of ponds and wells to ensure safe drinking water to the people. These women think to do better social service one should have the determination.

We have several women who are doing social service in our city. If they want, they could have got good employment and thereby social status. But they decided to do social service instead.

Sudha Malaiya, is state BJP spokesperson. She always wanted to so something for the society, particularly to the women. She is editor to Ojaswini, a magazine for women. She started the 'Mahila Grih Udyog' two years ago in which a large number of women are working.

Ms. Shiva Dubey is councellor in Sapna Special School. Aftger studies, she was immediately employed in a school. 'But I was not happy to work there. I thought, if I have to do something for the children, why should not I work at such a place where I am more useful?' Hence I joined the Sapna Special School where I work for the mentally retarded children.

Beena Pradhan , BHEL Assistant Officer (Pharmacy) says that today women are more successful in all fields. Regarding social appearance, women were always in the forefront. It is very difficult for me to spare time from my profession. Still, I am able to do social service for the women.

Sangita Sharma, is State BJP's Mahila Morcha Secretary. She is happy that she could do something for the society along with her work at home. It is good that women are moving ahead in all fronts, she said.
