Colombo, Apr 24:
In one of the bloodiest clashes with Tamil Tigers, Sri Lankan security forces have gunned down at least 100 rebels while losing 43 soldiers in the restive northern Jaffna peninsula, officials here said today.
The intense battle yesterday -- the fiercest between the two sides this year -- also left 33 soldiers missing, they said.
"Over 100 LTTE (rebels), including 15 senior terrorists and 43 soldiers, were killed in fierce fighting that lasted for 11 hours between Sri Lankan Army and LTTE in the narrow and open land stretches at Muhamalai and Kilaly in Jaffna yesterday," the Defence Ministry said.
Meanwhile, the Tigers claimed they have located the bodies of over 30 soldiers during the "clearing mission" so far in the northern front, according to pro-rebel website Tamilnet.
