Improving ties with India: New Pak PM initiative welcome

Pakistan Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gillani, has through a letter, appealed to President Pervez Musharraf, to commute the death sentences of a number of prisoners to life imprisonment. Gillani has also appealed to release those Indian prisoners in Pak jails who have completed their sentences. This recommendation of the Prime Minister may bring relief to Indian prisoner, Sarabjit who has been in jail in Pakistan for the last 18 months. Sarabjit faces gallows on May one but till now no order has been released. The initiative of PM Gillani may help in improvement of relations between India and Pakistan. On Sunday India had made a fresh appeal to Pakistan to show mercy to the unfortunate human being (Sarabjit) on humanitarian grounds. Sarabjit has been sentenced to death in connection with 1990 bomb blasts in Lahore and was to be hanged on April one. The hanging was however put off by a month after India made an appeal to Pakistan government. There is urgent need for improvement in relations between India and Pakistan. This would also facilitate in resolution of the ticklish Kashmir issue. Besides, the terrorists and evil elements have been exploiting the tension between the two countries to meet their nefarious designs. A large part of the budget of the two countries is spent in maintaining peace along the borders. Betterment of relations would ease this burden on finances as also bring a halt to unwanton killings and force the terrorists to surrender and enter mainstream of life. Recently President Musharraf, while addressing teachers and students at the Tsinghua university in Beijing said that as far as Pakistan was concerned `we are going on a bilateral approach with India'. We hope that good sense prevails on both the sides to resolve this long standing dispute amicably.
