Delhi under Olympic torch siege

The absurd police deployment in Delhi for the Olympic Torch Relay reminded me of Tiananmen Square, Kashmir and the North East, after all this is what each and every Kashmiri has to face in their daily life.

There is little use in blaming the cops, it is after all the ruling political elite who are finally responsible for the deployment of the police. The simpler and cheaper solution would have been to just have shoot at sight orders and carry the flame in an armoured carrier. I can see that happening very soon in India. Our politicians and the government love any excuse to kill its citizens.

Is anyone asking the correct questions on how much did it cost to deploy 17000 police personnel for a Torch?

After all is there no loss of "National Honour" and prestige when our people die of hunger and malnutrition? Are those who organised this huge paranoid jamboree at immense costs of the taxpayers money aware that there is a serious global as well as national food crisis looming and may be we should relocate our national priorities?

It reminds me of a typical Indian wedding these days, 'so what if we have to sell our land, mortgage our jewellery, take our daughter out of her school, or do not have enough to eat tomorrow, so what? but our son's wedding must be a grand one'

Sachin Singh, New Delhi
