Safe
travel on roads is posing a big challenge these days. Thousands
of people die in road accidents every year. Last week a bus
fell into Narmada Sagar canal in Gujarat and four dozen people
met watery grave. Women became widows and mothers lost their
sons and daughters. Such types of road accidents have become
very common. The problem has become serious as no sincere
efforts are being made to improve the situation. In fact this
task may not be that easy but at the same time it is not an
impossible task also. One of the reasons is that there is
no proper training facility for the drivers. Public transport
drivers should be given special training in driving their
vehicles safely. From time to time the drivers should be given
special training in driving safely. It may be a better way
to avoid road accidents. There should be ban on wine shops
on the road sides and providing liquor in hotels situated
on the highways. Licences of drivers who commit accidents
more than one time, should be cancelled. Though the only reason
of accident is not driving vehicle after consuming liquor.
SAeveral times accidents also take place due to fatigue of
the drivers. But, in most of the accidents the role of liquor
is seen. One of the reasons is not having proper experience
in driving. However, to run the traffic smoothly and to avoid
road accidents, there is need to adopt proper measures. In
this matter the governments should think seriously and there
is need to adopt proper planning. To check deaths on roads
due to accidents there is need to adopt special measures.
The traffic police should be given a free hand to enforce
the law. The moment theystart doing it, allegations of corruption
start flyingthick and fast and soon it is again free for all.
Apart from not wearing helmets, the 2-wheeler riders commit
a large number of other traffic violations including driving
without valid licences, ignoring traffic lights, attempting
short cuts through narrow road spaces, driving rashly and
negligently.
