Amarkantak, Apr 19:
A National Tribal University, the first of its kind in the country, is taking birth in this pilgrim town with reservation in this institution to go beyond the 50 per cent quota fixed by the Supreme Court.
The foundation stone for the Indira Gandhi National Tribal University was laid by Human Resources Development Minister Arjun Singh here today.
"To give special preference to the tribal students, the reservation can go beyond 50 per cent(upper limit fixed by the Supreme Court) and the stipulated quota limit for Scheduled Tribes which is 7.5 per cent can also be increased," R P Agarwal, Secretary, Department of Higher Education, Ministry of HRD, told news Agencies.
Singh said special courses will be designed and taught at the university which will review tribal education in the country. He said the university would realise Indira Gandhi's dream of empowering the tribals.
Singh said there would be no change in the location of the university. "I tell you frankly, there can be no change in the location of the university and if there is any change, it will be an unfortunate matter."
His remarks came in the backdrop of reports that the BJP-ruled state government was not keen on setting up a university at Amarkantak.
The Minister expressed displeasure over Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan not attending the function.
"If he would have come it would have been better. He came near this place, but did not come here," he said.
The university, which will be broadly on the pattern of existing central universities, will cater to the tribal people in Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Gujarat.
