Directors of the seven IITs, who met here on Wednesday, decided that 7 of the country's top technology institutes will admit at least 520 students this year.
The IIT directors' met today to discuss how to implement 27 per cent quota for the OBCs which has been given the go-ahead by the Supreme Court. The directors also decided that three new IITs would admit 120 students each including 27% OBC students.
They also discussed the enhancement of infrastructure and other facilities to increase the intake of the students. A decision to double the strength of the existing faculty in the next seven to eight years was also taken during the meet.
Apart from this, they also agreed that the IITs would have a total of 9% of OBC quota admissions.
There are presently about 4,000 seats in the seven IITs at Kharagpur, Mumbai, Chennai, Delhi, Kanpur, Guwahati and Roorkee.
Nearly 3.2 lakh students appeared in the IIT entrance test on April 13. The results would be announced in the last week of May after which counseling for admissions would start.
