Ladli Laxmi changes age-old mindset

By Our Staff Reporter

Bhopal, Apr 12: Madhya Pradesh government's Ladli Laxmi Yojana is the burning example of how an age-old conservative mindset can change within months. Following implementation of this scheme, the negative tendency in the society towards girls has started to undergo change. Now, birth of a girl fills a family with happiness and joy. There has been considerable increase in the number of families who are adopting family planning after two daughters. To top it all, disparity in sex ratio is also coming down. In this connection, tribal-predominant Mandla district has set a precedent.

Last two years figures of family planning in Narain Ganj development block of Mandla district manifest pleasant change in the mindset of people in the wake of Ladli Laxmi Youjana. In all, 388 LTT operations were conducted in Narain Ganj during the year 2006-07. Out of these only five couples had adopted family planning after the birth of two daughters whereas during the year 2007-08, as many as 528 families adopted family planning. Out of these 27 couples adopted family planning after two daughters which denotes five-fold increase as compared to last year. One hundred fifty out of 388 families who had undergone operation in the year 2006-07 had adopted family planning after two children. This was 38.6 per cent of total family planning cases. As compared to it, during the year, 301 out of 528 couples undergoing operation adopted family planning after two children in the year 2007-08 which denotes 57 percent increase. Similarly, 18 percent increase has been registered in the number of people going in for laparoscopy after two children. This would check population growth rate.
