India won't succumb to Taliban threat

Agencies

Baharampore (WB), April 12: Expressing outrage over the killing of two Indian construction workers in Afghanistan by suspected Taliban, India on Saturday said it would never succumb to the threats by the Islamist militia and measures would be taken to protect Indians working in that country. "We will take necessary measures to safeguard security of Indians working in Afghanistan," External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee told reporters here. Mukherjee said the five persons injured in the attack would be brought back to India for treatment. "Despite the Taliban attack, India will remain firm on its stand and not succumb to the pressures of the militia," Mukherjee asserted. Suspected Taliban militants today killed two personnel of Border Roads Organisation (BRO) and injured five in a suicide attack near Minar area in Nimroz province. Referring to the CPI(M) agitation against the Congress for rise in essential commodities, Mukherjee said the blame was unjusitified as Congress had put in place the PDS system across the country and the Marxists were responsible for its "collapse" in West Bengal.

India to continue road construction

Thiruvananthapuram: Notwithstanding the killing of two Indian road construction workers by suspected Taliban in Afghanistan India on Saturday said it would continue to help the rehabilitation process in that country by ensuring security of Indians engaged in that process. Defence Minister A K Antony told reporters here that when his Afghan counterpart had visited Delhi recently, India had expressed concern over the security threat faced by Indian workers engaged in the rehabilitation process in Afghanistan.

Expressing shock over the death of the two BRO personnel, Antony said India had sought details of the attack and arrangements were being made to transport the bodies. "It is a rude shock. This tragedy has happened when the road construction was in its final phase. We are in constant touch with the Afghan government", he said. Instructions had been issued to provide emergency relief to the members of the bereaved families, he said.
