State Pulse: Kerala: Nature plays havoc in Kerala

Kerala is passing through difficult days. The law and order situation is at its lowest ebb. Nature has dealt a blow to its poor farmers- RK Kutty

The summer rains that lashed the State of Kerala in the last week of March, which still continues every alternate day, was really untimely and unprecedented..It has caused sorrows to many farming households, particularly falling in Kuttanad (Alleppy district), the rice bowl of Kerala.

The other day I saw visuals of a couple of affected families of Kuttanad who have been left with nothing to fall back. Seeing the ripen rice fields submerged in rain water- a real curse when the harvest is ready to reap, the heads of few families, unbearable of the loss vis-a-vis the anxiety of how to pay back the bank loans, died instantaneously. The scene of sobbing housewives and children, narrating their saga to the television crew of Asia net, were really heart-rending. But, ironically, the entire Marxists hierarchy was assembled at Coimbatore in connection with their party plenary. One feels sorry for these Reds who want to ameliorate the lot of the poor, marginalized and the working class, unmindful of the reality on ground that things are not under anyone's control these days. These Marxists have really no answer to the facts on ground why nature is playing such truant. They don't want to hear any argument that relate to the forces of nature that play havoc with human lives. They believe on nothing but factors that are proven scientifically. Yes, but they deliberately shut their eyes when even scientists too are awe-struck and offer no solution to the problem of global warming and the unprecedented climate change these days. The Leftists in unison sum it up as the wrong policies of `imperialist forces', whereas they knowingly ignore the fact that multiplying CO2s pumped into the atmosphere was not only due to the CFCs emanating from the chimneys of the imperialist ideology nations but also those Communist or Socialist countries like Russia, China, Latin America, Cuba. The problem is universal and the only way to find a solution is through collective will and cooperation.

When I inquired some of my relatives in Kerala, I learnt that boiled rice now costs Rs 22 per kg in open market. The Left Front government distributes rice through the PDS which even animals cannot consume and the onus for that apathy is shifted on to the UPA, though they have no mechanism to track down middlemen who exchange the quality item supplied from the FCI godowns with substandard rice that ultimately reach the ration shops. People are really fed up. And now it is learnt that chickengunea has once-again raised its ugly head, as mosquitoes are aplenty- courtesy the untimely rain fury. The law and order situation is at its lowest ebb when goonda elements are cutting to size even Marxists foot-soldiers right under the very nose of the powers that be at the State capital. A high power central team is on visit to Kuttanad to assess the loss of paddy, which according to the State's rough estimation is reported to be around 2,000 crores.

Will the Marxists at least look up in the sky and call for the one who created the heaven and earth? They must remember one thing that no political party in India is in a position now to contain the vagaries of weather and they have no magic wand to please all the people at all the time, even if they attempt to catapult to power through their dream child the `Third Front'.
