Upkeep of colonies: Civic bodies responsible

The civic bodies are entrusted with different works for relief to the common people. Whenever these bodies are found lacking in their works, there is resentment among the people. The state government has issued orders to the civic bodies for making available basic services to the people. The government's ire against these bodies is justified as works pertaining to cleanliness, drinking water, street lighting and others are not satisfactory. Disposal of garbage is no doubt a gigantic problem with the civic bodies. And in private colonies this problem is worse still. The government's dilly dally on curbs on the use of polythene bags has ended in waste poly bags all over the towns and cities. Storm water drains are built but never covered properly. As a result, the drains get filled up with mud and other waste matter. If the drains are not cleaned before rains then the water flows on the roads instead of the drains. Many colonies do not have proper drainage system and the sewer water is connected to storm water drains. This leads to unhygienic surroundings and breeding by mosquitoes. Pigs also gather around such places. It is time the civic body checks the misuse of storm water drains. The government has provided public toilets only in some market areas. It is hoped this facility is provided at more places and the people be encouraged to use them properly. Awareness among the people regarding cleanliness and hygiene would make the job of the civic bodies easier.
