View Point: Suicides by farmers continue

Ironically even after the special package, farmers' suicide cases are unstoppable in Amrawati district of Maharashtra and 430 farmers have committed suicide after the declaration of the special package. Also, allegation of ignoring the farmers' problems is being charged over the state government.

Holding the discussions with the press group of Bhopal during their visit of Maharashtra, Member of Parliament Anant M Gudhe said the farmers' suicide cases have enhanced in last five years. After the special package at least 430 farmers have committed suicide and till date 1260 farmers have committed suicide in Amrawati. Gudhe alleged that the state government was ignoring farmers. Many schemes were declared but not implemented. Some people are forcefully acquiring the lands of farmers, Gudhe further alleged, demanding, the loans of farmers-till 2007-should be waived off.

Meanwhile, concerning the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS) Nanded district is in trouble, as the scheme has been applied in just 350 Gram Panchyats out of 850 Gram Panchayats. It is worth mentioning that the Nanded district was taken in the first phase of the implementation and the central government had declared it in the year 2006. Talking to the people of Pardy Panchayat in Loha Block, journalists group observed that nobody was benefited by the NREGS. According to the norms, wagers should be given Rs 66 to 80 as per the scheme but people admitted of getting just Rs 50. Also, pension scheme is not being applied in the region in a proper manner. Sources said the percentage of the institutional deliveries is 45 per cent. Similarly the NREGS will be applied in Jalna district from April 1.

Talking to the journalists the Nanded district collector Radheshyam Mopalwar informed that 3 lakh 41 thousand families have been registered under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS) and at least 8 lakh workers will be benefited by the scheme. We are focusing on the water conservation and horticulture.
