Fee hike in IIMs, others: Govt should set yardstick

Fee hike in higher educational institutions has become a subject of discussion. The Central government is now compelled to believe that it is difficult for it to exercise control over the fee hike. After IIMs and IITs, the other educational institutions could also go in for hike in fees in their institutions. Union Human Resources State Minister, D Purandeshwari considers that fee hike is fair. According to her, we should not think about running the institutions on the basis of 50 years old methods of fee structure. As the cost of all commodities is increasing, the same situation is with higher education institutions where fee hike is demand of the day. But, question arises as to how much fee should be increased. It should be increased with reason and not as per whims, to reap extra money. If it is essential to increase the fees then it should be in a convenient way. Higher education should also be within the reach of the common people. Along with this, there is need to increase facilities and quality too. Union Human Resource Development Minister believes that fee hike is unavoidable but how much, it is not yet clear. It should be kept in view that the benefit of higher education should be availed by everyone and a meritorious student of any group should not feel deprived of it. For providing good education, the government has to pay attention to its quality. Looking to the move of the IIMs and IITs going for hike in fees and others also following suit, it is essential that the government comes out with a yardstick at the national level and ends all confusion in the interest of education and the student community.
