Personal Thought: Left, NDA make
price rise an issue |
| There is absolutely no doubt prices of essential items are rising abnormally. Inflation reached its peak ie a 13 months high of 6.7% by week ending March. Government is in a dire strait to contain the price. The point to be taken note of with regard to this sudden spurt in price is deliberately ignored by everyone, particularly the hawkish opposition and the seasonal Left biradiri. The CPM national council was held at Coimbatore amid Krishna Bhajans and Bismillah Khan Brand Shehnai, the TN's popular musical instrument - Nadaswaram normally used in temple festivals and marriage functions. Whereas, in Communists plenary, these are totally forbidden, knowing very well the anti-God stand of the Reds. But, this time round, when the election bugle is expected in several North Indian states around November and then, if the Reds are not pushed to the extreme of withdrawing support over the Indo-US nuclear issue, the general election by November, 2009, therefore, price rise has become a hot potato for the UPA.
What the government is finding difficult to explain is the cause of this sudden spurt in prices, which the opposition vis-à-vis the supporting Leftists know very well, yet, knowing the past experiences, when several states as well as the Central government have gone by over price escalations (like the infamous onion price after Pokharan-II unsettled a BJP government in MP). The central government is a bit cautious in taming the bull by its horns now.
Alas, the government's pushing through of populist endeavours, aimed at extending great relief to the farmers, followed by the haste with which the 6th Pay Commission recommendations too is going to be accepted, without much amendments, are added factors. Neither the UPA supporting friends- the Left parties nor those in the opposition, mainly the BJP stalwarts, are minting any harsh words against the loan waiver scheme or the boost in pay of Babus, as they know pretty well in an election time it would have a countervailing impact.
So, like the infamous Malayalam adage 'either out of the Akhra or on the chest of Ashan (Guru), both the Leftists and the hawkish opposition have chosen the latter option and kicked up price rise issue as a common weapon to corner the government. Hope government would come out with their own convincing views to counter this propaganda with facts and figures, the earlier the better. In any case, Karat, Yechury and Co must assess the ground reality, before jumping their guns against the UPA government which is working in tandem in consultation with the Comrades from time to time. They must remember one thing that no political party in India is in a position now to please all the people at all the time.
