Hike in power tariff: Production remains stagnant

The Madhya Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission on Tuesday announced new tariffs for its different set of consumers. No hike has been effected for consumers falling under the domestic category section. However, consumers consuming between 101 units and 1000 units, would have to pay additional amount ranging between Rs 10 and Rs 70. There has been reduction by 8 paise per unit in the energy charge for non-domestic category. Similarly, hike has been effected in energy charge for agriculture and industrial consumers. A net hike of 2.76% has been effected in tariffs for low tension and high tension consumers. Power for farmers will become costlier by 6.07%. A hike of 15 paise has been effected for agricultural consumers. Energy charges are increased by 5 paise per unit for railway traction. The Commission however contends that the hike is minimum as compared to the increase in cost of inputs required for generating electricity. Thus, on the whole the power tariff has been increased. It will further add to the financial burden of the common man. There has not been much increase in power production. However, the power tariff is being increased. The quality of power too needs to be improved, at the same time there are no signs of improvement in the PLF too. The distribution system too is not fully perfect. The situation would further compound when private parties would commence power production and lead in power tariffs. There is urgent need for the department and the administration to review the hike in power tariffs.
