New Delhi, Apr 3:
Seeking to allay Beijing's concerns over safety of the Olympic torch during its relay here, India has conveyed to China that all measures will be taken to ensure success of the event next month.
The assurance was conveyed by External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee to his Chinese counterpart Yang Jiechi when the latter called him up on Wednesday.
Yang raised the issue of the torch security while briefing Mukherjee on the situation in Tibet and appreciating the steps taken by India to ensure safety of the Chinese diplomatic and consular establishments and citizens here.
"The Chinese Foreign Minister expressed his confidence that the passage of the Olympic torch through India would take place smoothly," External Affairs Ministry spokesman Navtej Sarna said.
Mukherjee "conveyed that the government of India will take the necessary measures to ensure that the passage of the Olympic torch is a success," Sarna said.
China apprehends that Tibetan refugees could try to disrupt the relay of the torch here and has conveyed its concerns to India. It had earlier warned that the India-leg of the relay could be skipped if foolproof security for the Olympic flame was not assured.
In view of China's concerns, India has decided to reduce the route of the relay of the torch from nine kilometres to three kilometres.
