Sensex ends up 124pts

Mumbai April 2: The Sensex opened with a huge positive gap of nearly 400 points at 16,023 on strong positive cues from the global markets. The index zoomed to a high of 16,237 in early deals, but could not hold the gains....

Selling gained momentum in the latter half of the trading session, and the index dropped to a low of 15,719 - down over 500 points from the day's high.

The Sensex finally ended with a gain of 124 points at 15,750.

The market breadth was fairly positive - out of 2,720 stocks traded, 1,762 advanced, 909 declined and 49 were unchanged.

The NSE Nifty zoomed to a high of 4,917 - up 177 points - but pared gains and eventually ended marginally higher (15 points) at 4754.

HDFC advanced 4.7% to Rs 2,470. Infosys gained over 4% to Rs 1,482.

ICICI Bank moved up 3.7% to Rs 784. Jaiprakash Associates rallied 3% to Rs 232.

Satyam, Mahindra & Mahindra and Bharti Airtel added 2.5% each at Rs 407, Rs 666 and Rs 824, respectively.

TCS gained 2% at Rs 851. SBI and Tata Motors were up 1.7% each at Rs 1,653 and Rs 638, respectively.

Wipro moved up 1.3% to Rs 414. HDFC Bank and ACC were up 1% each at Rs 1,322 and Rs 834, respectively.

Reliance Energy plunged 4.5% to Rs 1,230. Tata Steel dropped over 3% to Rs 646.

BHEL shed 2% at Rs 1,853. ITC slipped 1.5% to Rs 208.

Hindustan Unilever and Larsen & Toubro were down over 1% each at Rs 236 and Rs 2,865, respectively.

GSS America topped the value chart with a turnover of Rs 344.30 crore followed by Reliance (Rs 319.75 crore), Reliance Capital (Rs 278 crore), Essar Oil (Rs 208.30 crore) and Reliance Petroleum (Rs 207.50 crore).

Debutant Indiabulls Securities led the volume chart with trades of around 1.50 crore shares followed by Reliance Petroleum (1.22 crore), Kashyap Technologies (1.10 crore), Reliance Natural Resources (1.02 crore) and Essar Oil (95.50 lakh).
