An exercise in futility |
| Delay is the worst enemy of sound investigation. Ace investigators will tell you that the best way to kill investigation is to delay it on one pretext or the other. In days evidence will get destroyed and the truth will never come out. Gujarat riots of 2002 are a classic case of unpardonable delay in completing the inquiry. Six years after the riot the Commission of Inquiry appointed to unravel the truth has not been able to produce a report stating its findings and apportioning blame for the alleged 2000 killings in the worst ever communal riots after independence.
Meanwhile, a few days back one of the members of the Commission of Inquiry, Justice Shah passed away. Till today the truth remains a mystery. Two elections in between, a number of terrorist strikes and thousands of acres of writings have completely messed up the picture. It appears almost impossible to ascertain the truth of the matter now. Recently the Apex Court ordered a fresh investigation into the riots by a select team of police officers of impeccable integrity. The team will be headed by a former DGP. One wonders if an investigation after a delay of 6 years will be a successful one. A lot of water has flowed down the Sabarmati in these years. Some witnesses would have died, some would have left their homes and hearths and those still willing to tell their tales will have either forgotten the sequence of events or will have come under influences that are injurious to unraveling the truth. The moral of the story is: If you want to find out the truth press on with the investigation immediately and rest not till the job is done. In a big case like this 6 months to one year, when the things are fresh, should be sufficient.
