Italian National Day

The rendering of our National Anthem at the Ambassador's residence (27 March) was one of the best I have heard but the jarring note was that India was represented by a relatively junior functionary of the MEA. A former Foreign Secretary, true to the rules of diplomacy, commented that 'reciprocity' is a principle of the Ministry. If so, how is it that we do not follow that school of thought with other countries? For example, our envoy in Beijing was summoned by the Chinese at 2 a.m. to lodge a protest. Our South Block should have also called the Chinese Ambassador in the early morning when they made noises about our Prime Minister's trip to Arunachal. Quid pro quo is a good concept if we can follow it faithfully.
