Sacrifice for people's cause: Sonia

Kanpur (UP), March 31: The chairperson of the United Progressive Alliance and the Congress president Sonia Gandhi called upon the party workers to remain prepared to go to jail if they wanted to revive the party in the politically crucial Uttar Pradesh.

The Congress president was addressing the convention of the Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee in Kanpur on Monday. Sonia Gandhi said that the party leaders should ask the Government to tell them where the fund spent sanctioned by the Central Government. If the State Government failed to reply, they should launch agitation against it.

She said that if need arose, the party general secretary Rahul Gandhi would also go to jail to solve the problems facing the people of the state.

The Congress president said that when the BJP, Samajwadi Party and the Bahujan Samaj Party formed their governmentin the state, they forgot the problems the problems of the people. She urged the party leaders to strengthen the party. Sonia Gandhi who was addressing the convention that was held after 26 years emphasized the need for strengthening the party. Sonia Gandhi urged the party delegates to tell the masses about the welfare measures launched by the UPA Government. She said that the Congress was the only party that could never make any compromise with the communal and casteist forces. She pointed out that these forces had destroyed the political atmosphere of the state.

Admitting weakness at the organizational level, she said that it was not a political organization but a movement. The Congress president said that every one was feeling that Congress regime was good in comparison to regimes of other political parties.

The Congress convention was held in Kanpur in an attempt to revive the party in the state. The party passed a resolution at the convention accusing the ruling Bahujan Samaj Party of corruption.

The entire city was wrapped in the Congress flags and welcome arches leading to venue of the rally were erected to welcome the Congress president Sonia Gandhi and her son Rahul Gandhi. On the opening day of a two-day delegates' convention of the Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee in Kanpur, the party attacked Chief Minister Mayawati on issues such as corruption, transfers and trifurcation of the State. The Congress session was held in Kanpur after 26 years.

A political resolution said it was difficult to expect a transparent and corruption-free administration under the BSP Government and the Chief Minister's past record proved this. The present Government had made a record number of transfers, it said. On creation of smaller States, the Congress accused Ms. Mayawati of playing politics. It asked her to stop writing letters and issuing statements. The Chief Minister should send to the Centre a resolution passed by the Assembly on the creation of Bundelkhand, Purvanchal and western Uttar Pradesh.
