All Indians vehemently and vigorously voted for Taj Mahal's entry to the list of seven Wonders of the World. We have powered to the second position of the list. This act attracted more and more tourists from all over the world to India. There is a steady increase in the list of visitors of Agra. When I stood beneath the historical monument my feelings of joy and happiness burst into tears, not because of the emperor Shahjehan built this unparalleled monument for his beloved Mumtaz, but for the unknown, marvelous architects, artists, labourers who day in and day out toiled for the fulfillment of Shahjehan's dream project come true.
Artists and craftsmen brought from other countries after finishing their job were rewarded by imprisoning them or penalty of death in order to prevent them not to make another one similar to this; this is the history of 16th century. Twenty two years of work without rest drained all of them of their youth, vigour and energy. Now Archaeological Department of India, the custodian of Taj Mahal charges two different tariff from visitors. Indians are charged Rs 20 per adult whereas the foreign visitors are charged Rs 750.
Instead of promoting tourism they are looting the foreigners, on the pretext that they can afford the amount. The facilities provided to them are meager for eg the kiosk for tea is charging Rs 10 per cup. Milk is not available at all. More shops for tea and snacks are required with reasonable rates. Long queues are witnessed in all the three gates which can also be solved by opening more ticket counters. Outside Taj there should be one or two modern lavatories.
`Yamuna', the epic river is drying up, having no water, if at all any, dirty emitting foul smell. This is not the river I have studied in books of my childhood. In all examinations there was a question to answer- why North Indian rivers have water round the season? Cleanliness is a must for this river. `Yamuna' and in the vicinity of Taj, water should be pumped and stored, only then the beauty of the monument can be felt fully.
