An
amount of Rs 14,182 crore has been approved for the annual
plan of Madhya Pradesh. This amount is 18 per cent more than
last year's. The Centre would provide Rs 150 crore grant in
a single installment for the same. The amount was approved
after exchanging of views between State Chief Minister, Shivraj
Singh Chouhan and Planning Commission vice chairman, Montek
Singh Ahluwalia. Under the annual plan for 2008-09, 52 per
cent sum has been reserved for infrastructure development,
32 per cent for social service sector development and remaining
16 per cent for other sectors. The Central grant would also
be spent on construction of Anganwadi centres, establishment
of bio-diversity parks, setting up a planetarium in Ujjain,
construction of higher secondary school buildings, hostels,
repairing of Ashrams etc. There is provision to spend more
amount for Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes development
which is a commendable step, but it is also essential that
the quality of these developmental works is monitored by experts.
The situation this year would be better as the state has been
allotted 18 per cent more amount in comparison to last year.
The utility of both amount being received and spent should
be proved. A lot remains to be done in the infrastructure
sector of the State. The CM also apprised Dr Ahluwalia about
severe drought prevailing in the State. It was informed that
39 out of 48 districts were facing severe drought conditions
especially in the Bundelkhand area and demanded relief to
the tune of Rs 24,000 crores under the National Calamity Relief
Fund.
