Improving higher education: Semester system in graduation courses

With a view to improve the standard of higher education in the State, the state government has taken a decision to implement semester system in post graduation and graduation classes. Governor Dr Balram Jakhar chaired the State-level coordination committee meeting in Raj Bhawan which would empower and be helpful in reforming education. It was also decided in the meeting that in coming session 2008-09 a calendar of 200 working days should be prepared. There is need of 200 working days for study because the course of the students might be completed and unnecessary wastage of time should be checked. But it should be implemented honestly and transparently. Similarly, the fees taken from the students would be unified which is a commendable step. Governor has also issued directives for filling up vacant posts with a view to improve the quality of education in colleges and universities. Colleges and universities problems in completing courses due to lack of teachers. Governor has also given directives for necessary administrative reforms in universities. Quality of education gets affected due to negligence and unwanted delays of the staff in the universities. Thus there is need to bring in administrative reforms. The initiative for reforms in higher education at the state level coordination committee meeting is commendable. These efforts would go a long way in bringing the education system on par with the national level.
