Prime
Minister Dr Manmohan Singh has once again reiterated the commitment
of the government towards generating energy for needs of the
country. The govt is committed to further development of energy
both as an environment friendly source of power and as a means
of widening the energy basket available. There is need to
think seriously over the stern attitude adopted by the Opposition
on the Indo-American civil nuclear treaty. All the four factions
of the Left parties including CPI and CPM clearly said that
they would oppose imposing treaty. The Left parties during
the politbureau said that the UPA government was violating
the common minimum programme by desiring to go ahead with
the deal. At present 60pc of country's power generation is
through coal whereas nuclear power accounts for only 3 per
cent. A government which does not take care of the needs of
its future generations is playing a traitor's role. What we
are today is due to the planning done several years back.
Hence Dr Manmohan Singh's concern for augmenting energy supplies.
At the same time the generation of power through hydel methods
is limited and dependent on good rainfall and storage of water
in dams. Nuclear scientists opine that this agreement is finally
the best for fulfillment of India's energy interests. In this
condition, the objection of Leftists and other opposition
parties is beyond understanding. Our neighbouring countries
like China and Pakistan have become alert with this treaty
and they have started its diagnosis. Finally, we can say that
the treaty is in India's favour. Any opposition to this agreement
is likely to benefit China and Pakistan. Left parties and
NDA allies should consider over their attitude and strengthen
the govt by their support for the treaty.
