Uproar in Assembly over `cash for vote' row

By Our Staff Reporter

Bhopal, Mar 19: State assembly here on Wednesday was adjourned sine die amidst din created by the Opposition parties in the House over `cash for vote' row. As soon as proceedings of the assembly commenced after paying tributes to late Sambhaji Rao, Sitaram Sadho and Uttamchand Israni who died recently, all hell broke loose with the Congress MLAs creating a hullabaloo over the payment of alleged bribe of Rs 10 lakh to the Samajwadi Party MLA, Kishore Samrite for supporting the candidature of the Rajya Sabha's independent nominee from Madhya Pradesh, Vivek Tankha.

The Opposition party MLAs who included leader of Opposition in the state assembly, Jamuna Devi, former minister Sajjan Singh Verma, Ashwin Joshi, Antar Singh Darbar, Arif Aqueel, Hukum Singh Karara and others alleged the BJP's hand in the bribery row which, according to them, was aimed at purely to defame the Congress. The Speaker Ishwardas Rohani not able to control the unruly Opposition, adjourned the House for 10 minutes.

However, when the proceedings of the Assembly recommenced after 10 minutes, the Opposition party MLAs again disrupted proceedings of the House with raking up the bribery row and accusing the BJP with conspiring against the Congress. As a result of this, the Speaker again adjourned the House till 11.30 am.

When the House recommenced at 11.30 am, the Congress MLAs once again were seen on their toes. The `controversial' Samajwadi Party MLA Kishore Samrite who joined the proceedings of the House after second adjournment, wanted to say something but the hue and cry of the Congress MLAs did not enable him to speak anything notwithstanding permission of the Speaker.

In the meantime, state parliamentary affairs minister, Narottam Mishra also stood up from his seat and urged the Speaker to enable Samrite to make a statement in the House. But Jamuna Devi and the other Congress MLAs continued their sloganeering . The leader of Opposition said that she would not hear Samrite and questioned the logic behind the BJP's fielding its third Rajya Sabha candidate from Madhya Pradesh, given the fact that the party did not have the desired votes.

On the other hand, the Samajwadi Party MLA not being allowed to speak, went inside the well of the House and submitted a letter to the Speaker seeking security cover to him fearing threat to his life from the Congress leaders. On the plea of the Speaker, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan assured to provide adequate security cover to Samrite.

Amidst sloganeering of the Congress MLAs, Rohani completed the Assembly proceedings within five minutes and adjourned the House sine die at 11.46 am.
