PCPIR project likely to be delayed

Agencies

Bhubaneshwar, Mar 16: The Centre on Sunday indicated that some more time would be required for implementation of the country's first ever proposed Petroleum Chemicals and Petro-chemical Investment Regime.

"The ministry is now examining proposals submitted by five different states for setting up the PCPIR in their respective regions", Union Chemicals and Fertilizer minister Ram Vilas Paswan said.

Paswan, who was here to attend a party meeting, told reporters that the government had received proposals from Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, Orissa and Gujarat for setting up PCPIR in their states.

He said after examination by the ministry, the proposals would be forwarded to a committee. "Thereafter, the proposals would go to the high power committee for its approval before being placed in the Union Cabinet", Paswan said adding that the process demanded some time.

According to the PCPIR guidelines, it required at least 250 sq km of land to be developed by both by the Centre and the concerned state.

"While 40 per cent of the land under PCPIR will be used for setting up of industries, rest will house township and other facilities", the minister said adding that the central government would spend Rs 10,000 crore in the project.

He said while the Centre would provide national highways, airports and other major facilities, the concerned state will have to develop hospital, educational centres and other facilities within the PCPIR area.
