Agreement to restore peace in Kannur

Kannur, Mar 15: An all party meeting on Saturday decided to work for lasting peace in the trouble-torn areas here, following killing of seven persons in attacks by RSS-BJP and CPI (M) workers recently.

Reading out the resolution adopted at the meeting, chaired by Kerala Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan, Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan said government would take timely precautionary measures to tackle violence in the event of retaliatory attacks by workers of any political party in its bid to restore lasting peace in the district.

As part of peace initiative, District Collector and Superintendent of Police would hold meetings every month with political parties and review the situation, he said.

The government would view any kind of provocative actions that tend to vitiate the atmosphere of peace as "serious" and would take legal steps against perpetrators of violence, the resolution said.

The meeting was attended among others by Union Minister E Ahmed, Opposition Leader Oommen Chandy, KPCC President, Ramesh Chennithala, CPI-M state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan, BJP State chief P K Krishnadas, RSS leader Valsan Thillankeri, A P Abdulla Kutty, MLA
