View Point: Stop brick use & save agri land

For a living house unit, of building 50,000 bricks are wanted. India's population increasing at a rate of 4.5% and every year 20 million units will be required. The bricks made by soil in construction excavate, land about 2,50,000 hectare per annum and leave the land useless, this great loss of land reflects to agriculture land & foodgrain shortage.

The buildings constructed by bricks have great history of a million year. Now the time has come to stop bricks burden and switch to light weight structures Glass fiber reinforced concrete(GFRC), using gypsum, cement, glass fiber (1:1: 5%) mixture. San Francisco towers USA having area 30,000 sqm constructed in 180 days with 1/3rd cost and its beautiful look is attracting the tourists of the world. GFRC is light weight (DD=55kg/cft), its panels of 1/4"-1/2" thickness (outer walls of the building are glass fiber reinforced concrete (GFRC) architectural panels that are attached to the steel frame using 'bonding rods' embedded in the GFRC panel, replace walls of 9", increasing plinth area, Similarly roof and floor thickness is reduced to 1/3rd comparing RCC (since better comp. strength, shear, coeff. Thermal conductivity). Dead load of structure of a building reduced to average 1/3rd the design of columns and spacing economizes. Durability: Precast's facade provides extra protection against weather extreme conditions, as hurricanes, tornadoes, high wind speed and offer strong seismic options and won't need tuck-pointing or painting reducing long term maintenance costs, and offering an life time attractive appearance. Consumers around the world are considering new option for building their residences. Harold's Rotondo Precast Co in Rehoboth, Mass and team leader for PCI's Dormitory market group gained popularity for their aesthetic appeal. Precast concrete architectural panels can provide to clad single family homes creating an economical and pleasing look to match a wide range of design styles.

Economy: The combination of benefits, such as speed of erection, inherent fire resistance minimize construction costs by lessening labor, material, hollowcore provides with 8"-12" depth reduces building heights, cutting material costs. The ability of the slabs to span upto 30' also can eliminate the columns of building, light panels plaster material also offer significant energy savings, especially if insulated sandwich wall are used, Slabs also save space, because one slab becomes the ceiling for one story and the floor for the next, eliminating the need for drop ceiling or false ceiling. No matter the type of housing, from single family to hotels and motels, Industrial building, Administrial or business centres, to assisted-living senior units, precast concrete components offer flexible, economical and aesthetic options.

Welcome to ACENT magazine's housing issue. This in-depth report provides the design team with a comprehensive look at precast trends, huge number of projects across all housing markets that show the design possibilities of GFRC. On shifting to modern technique we shall change the scenario of residential buildings, market places, industrial and administrative blocks for their ultra modern finish look, towards development of urban development. This will save not only our million hectare agricultural land, but cost of construction too. The time factor will also be involved to play in future due to lightness of elements of building as comparing RCC heavy structures of present day.
