Violence over power crisis: Understand Govt's limitations

Power crisis is prevailing again in MP. Lack of power supply, announced and non- announced power cuts, less production- more consumption is plaguing the State. On Wednesday there was protest in Vidhan Sabha by the Opposition over the issue. Congress staged dharna after walk out. The Congress activists in Berasia had set abaze the office of electric department. They also locked electric department office in Sagar. If power production is proper then supply would be okay. And if production is less, then load shedding is the only way. The demand for power at present is of the order of 6200mw. Availability of power is 4500mw and the required supply is 1700mw. The power cut in villages, tehsil headquarters, district headquarters and divisional headquarters is of the order of 16 hours, 9 hours, 5 hours and 5 hours respectively. Though, Energy Minister, Gaurishankar Shejwar has claimed in Vidhan Sabha that power production and supply have increased. The minister blamed the union government for meting out stepmotherly treatment to MP. The opposition leaders in Vidhan Sabha did not listen to him and staged dharna in the house amidst noisy scenes. Only serious issues are raised in Vidhan Sabha. It is true that power crisis is prevailing in the state but the way of registering protest should be of Gandhian way, and never violent. Government and the electric department have their own limitations. 500mw unit of Birsinghpur is already closed, moreover another unit of 210mw is also closed- the result is shortage of 1700mw of power. It is also true that power crisis is affecting the students who are taking examinations these days. There is need for repairs of transformers in remote areas. The employees and officials of electric distribution company should take the people into confidence. Government is trying its best to overcome power crisis. Adopting violent methods in no way would benefit the people and the State.
