Crores worth water tax held up

Bhopal, Mar 13: Public sector undertakings are not paying water tax worth crores of rupees. But Bhopal Municipal Corporation could not dare to recover water charges. Municipal Corporation is supplying water to these organisations for years without taking water tax.

Corporation spends Rs 30-35 crore yearly on water supply in the capital. But recovery from water tax is limited only to Rs 10 to 11 crores. Municipal Corporation snaps tap connection of private people if they do not pay water tax, but tap connections at state and central government buildings and government undertakings are not touched by BMC even though large amounts are due against them.

The Municipal Corporation has to recover dues of previous years' water tax including Rs 30,41,46, 746. But in this financial year it could recover only Rs 6,16,95,545.

In last year in the same period it had recovered Rs 6,74,23,691. As the working system of municipal corporation team remained lax in the current financial year in comparison to last year in first 10 months water tax recovery is Rs 57,28,146 less.

If the municipal corporation only recovers water tax from government organisations then the difference of dues would be reduced to a great extent. But municipal administration does not feel the need of paying attention towards it.
