Betul LS bypoll on Apr 12

New Delhi, Mar 13: In the midst of a talk of a Lok Sabha elections by the year-end, the Election Commission today announced bypolls to four Lok Sabha seats including three in Uttar Pradesh on April 12.

The bypolls to Khalilabad, Azamgarh and Meerut (all in UP) have been necessitated following the disqualification of three BSP members who had crossed over to Samajwadi Party sometime back.

The Betul seat in Madhya Pradesh had fallen vacant following the death of BJP member Vijay Kumar Khandelwal.

The EC also announced byelections to four assembly seats -- Bilgram and Colonelganj (both in UP), Laxmipur (Orissa) and Kharba (West Bengal) on the same day.

According to the schedule, the notification would be issued on March 19. Last date for filing nominations would be on March 26 and the scrutiny would take place the following day. Withdrawal of nominations would be on March 29.

The counting would take place on April 16.

The polling would be conducted through Electronic Voting Machines and the model code of conduct would come into force with immediate effect, the EC said.

Cong releases names for RS

Congress releases list of 11 names for nominations to Rajya Sabha that includes Motilal Vohra, PrithviRaj Chavan, Subbirami Reddy and Murli Deora.

Union Minister T Subbirami Reddy and Nandi Yelliah got renomination from Andhra Pradesh for Rajya Sabha polls as Congress announced names of eleven nominees for the March 26 biennial elections.

While Union Minister G K Vasan has been renominated from Tamil Nadu, Union Ministers Prithviraj Chavan and Murli Deora from Maharashtra.

Former Chief Minister Reishang Keishing is nominated from Manipur and former Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Mukut Mithi from his home state.

While Chaudhury Ram Prakash will be party nominee from Haryana, Bhubaneswar Kalita from Assam and R C Kuntia from Orissa.
