Bedlam in House over Kerala violence

Agencies

New Delhi, March 12 : As soon as the Lok Sabha met for the day, BJP members were on their feet demanding suspension of Question Hour to take up the issue of violence in Kerala where the saffron party and Left parties have been at loggerheads.

Parliament was on Wednesday rocked by incidents of violence in Kerala leading to adjournment of both Houses during the pre-lunch sitting.

As soon as the Lok Sabha met for the day, BJP members were on their feet demanding suspension of Question Hour to take up the issue of violence in Kerala where the saffron party and Left parties have been at loggerheads.

Levelling charges against the Left parties, BJP members said the situation in Kannur in Kerala was bad and demanded an immediate discussion on it.

The BJP members raised the matter in the backdrop of Kerala High Court's observation that "bloodshed" in Kannur could end only by timely deployment of sufficient central forces by the Centre.

Left parties strongly objected to it and a verbal clash ensued leading to pandemonium in the House.

Speaker Somnath Chatterjee described their behaviour as "shameful" and amounting to "murder of democracy". When his repeated appeals for restoration of order went unheeded, he adjourned the House till 1 pm.

Trouble broke out in the Rajya Sabha during Zero Hour when senior BJP member M Venkaiah Naidu sought to raise the issue but was disallowed by the Chair.

This angered the members belonging to the main opposition BJP and soon they rushed to the well shouting slogans.

As the uproar continued for 15 minutes, Deputy Chairperson K Rahman Khan adjourned the House till 1 pm.
