View Point: Attack on AKG Bhawan

Unsavoury incidents are taking place in this country. People start suddenly behaving in uncivilized manner. Of course, it (the attack on AKG Bhawan, Delhi on 9/3/08) was an echo of what continued to happen in distant south- Kerala. Ever since the Marxist party led LDF government took over power under CM VS Achutanandan, Kannur district started boiling up. It is a fact that today's Kannur is entirely different than what the former Kerala CM AK Antony brought under control. But the difference then was that Antony himself held the Home Ministry and gave full power to the Police Department to take stern action against the violators of law and order. But that is past. Today, the irony in Kerala is that even within the LDF there are groups that are affiliated to personalities. As on date, the group under the CPM State general secretary Pinarai Vijayan is holding an upper hand over the group under CM VS Achutanandan. And the irony of ironies is that the Home Minister in Kerala is a person belonging to the Vijayan group and he is a man from Kannur.

Yesterday, leader of the opposition in Kerala Assembly Oommen Chandy of the Congress party was on a fast in Kannur district to bring peace in that city. Every day there was merciless killing of RSS BJP men by the Marxists and vice versa. People are fed up. The opposition party led by the UDF insists CM Achutanandan to act but he is helpless. The other day the CM cut short a Delhi visit and rushed to Kannur to call for an all party meet to resolve the situation. But, sadly, while Oommen Chandy was on fast and Achutanandan rushed to Kannur to call for the meeting, the sudden development that took place at Delhi was a flash point. Yuva Morcha (or the Hindu Maha Sabha) members in large numbers charged towards the AKG Bhawan where the CPM Central Committee Meeting was in progress. According to television visuals, there were only a few policemen to control the situation that went out of control all of a sudden. In fact, those policemen too were taken by surprise when big stones flew from the Morcha men that hit everywhere.

Few cars of the Central Committee leaders that were parked around AKG Bhawan were badly damaged. It was shown that Politburo and Rajya Sabha Member Sitaram Yethury's car- Maruti Zen was badly damaged. About six members of the Central Committee, who came out of the building to see what was happening, were hurt in stone pelting, so also many workers of the CPM party office in the mob attack.

As a consequence of this sudden, unexpected action from the Hindutva forces, the Marxists in Kerala took out huge processions throughout Kerala and warned that none of the BJP offices in that State will be spared in retaliation of what had happened in Delhi. Of course, the State immediately ordered police protection to the BJP offices but situation can turn worse.

The only Monday solace was diversion of attention of the whole country over the pathetic failure of Indian Hockey from qualifying for the Beijing Olympics, where India was trounced by Britain 2:0, that was truly a dark day for India. All our basking in the glory of the Cricket fiesta over the victory in Australia is over-shadowed by these unsavory incidents. Whom to be blamed than ourselves?
