Sensex ends above 16,000

Mumbai Mar 11: The Sensex opened with a negative gap of 146 points at 15,778, and dropped to a low of 15,739 in early deals.

Buying at lower levels helped the index rebound into positive zone, and display positive bias for the rest of the day.

The Sensex touched a high of 16,168 - up 429 points from the day's low - and finally ended with a gain of 199 points at 16,123.

The NSE Nifty ended 66 points higher at 4,866.

The BSE market breadth was fairly positive - out of 2,747 stocks traded, 2,109 advanced, and 605 declined today.

DLF zoomed over 10% to Rs 749. Larsen & Toubro gained nearly 7% at Rs 2,917.

ACC added 5.7% at Rs 811. Ranbaxy and Bajaj Auto gained over 4.5% each at Rs 453 and Rs 2,076, respectively.

BHEL and NTPC was up over 4% each at Rs 1,993 and Rs 193, respectively.

Reliance moved up around 3% to Rs 2,347.

Reliance Energy gained over 2% to Rs 1,287.

Maruti and Satyam dropped 3% each to Rs 866 and Rs 396, respectively.

HDFC, Cipla and Wipro shed 2.5% each at Rs 2,501, Rs 196 and Rs 392, respectively.

Tata Motors and ICICI Bank slipped around 2% each to Rs 658 and Rs 854, respectively.
