CBI not to probe Scarlett murder

Agencies

Panaji, Mar 11: Despite no headway being made into police' investigation of the murder of the murder of 15-year-old British teenager Scarlett Keeling, Goa Chief Minister Digamber Kamat on Tuesday categorically ruled out a CBI probe into the complex case.

Justifying the action taken by the Goa Police so far, the Chief Minister said that the investigations were on the right track and exuded confidence that the mystery behind the murder would be resolved soon.

"State police was efficient enough to handle it. We will be able to crack the case in next two days and I have full faith in the officers who are handling the investigations. There is no need of a CBI enquiry," he said.

"We are also looking into the allegations on police officers at Anjuna Police Station and we have already shunted a police sub inspector Nerlon Albuquerque in this connection," Kamat added.

Meanwhile, the Goa Police also sounded an alarm by saying that tourists coming to India should be more cautious.

The move comes shortly after the authorities in Goa decided to conduct an ossification test to determine Scarlett Keeling's actual age.

The authorities have detained at least three people in connection with the girl's rape and subsequent murder.

Samaon D`Souza , one of the main accused, has been charged with raping and murdering the British minor.

However, if the ossification test proves that Keeling was 18 years of age and not a minor, then charges of rape against the accused Samaon D`Souza are likely to be dropped.

The Goa Police' decision to conduct the ossification test has caught Scarlett Keeling's family with huge surprise, which says that Scarlett`s passport and other documents proved that she was a minor.

The authorities are also investigating the role of big drug dealers and their links, if any, with the murder.

Meanwhile, Scarlett`s mother Fiona Mackowen will also come under scrutiny, as the police has also started looking into her role in the case.

According to sources, the Police is likely to investigate why Fiona went to visit the Gokarna beach in Karnataka leaving behind her minor daughter with the D`Souzas, whose house she had rented out for the past six months.

The Goa Police had earlier dismissed Scarlett`s death as a simple case of drowning.

But with the new evidence of murder concluded after re-autopsy of Scarlett`s body, the police arrested bartender and drug peddler Samson D`Souza on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Fiona and the family of the dead British teenager has demanded a CBI inquiry into the case.

The mystery behind Scarlett`s death further deepens, as it points to the doctor, who conducted the first autopsy failed to mention that she could have been murdered?

Second, the Goa Police took account of the drug angle when they had earlier interrogated people involved in the drug trade?
