Mumbai, March 9: Goa Governor Sanayangba Chubatoshi Jamir, who has been given the additional responsibility of Maharashtra following the resignation of S M Krishna, on Sunday took charge of the state's gubernatorial office. Bombay High Court Chief Justice Swatanter Kumar administered the oath of office to 77-year old Jamir.

Besides Krishna, chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh, chairman of Maharashtra Legislative Council Shivaji Rao Deshmukh and members of the state cabinet were present on the occasion. Jamir, who was Chief Minister of Nagaland for several years, is expected to address the joint sitting on March 10 when the budget session of state legislature commences.

Born in 1931 in Ungma village in Nagaland, Jamir studied law, but joined politics during his student days at Allahabad University.

He was elected as the first Lok Sabha member from Nagaland in 1961. He served in various capacities in the central government, including as a minister handling different portfolios.

He was first elected to the Nagaland assembly in 1971 and has a record of winning every time he contested. He became chief minister of the state in 1980 and went on to have the longest tenure in that post. He was appointed Goa Governor in June 2004.
