2 days transit remand for Nanda

Agencies

New Delhi, March 9: The father-son duo of Suresh and Sanjeev Nanda, who are accused of receiving kickbacks in the controversial Barak missile deal, have been sent to two-days' transit remand by a CBI court in Mumbai. The two - who are arms dealer - were arrested by the CBI on Saturday night, along with Deputy Director of Income Tax, Ashutosh Kumar, and a chartered accountant, Bipin Shah, for allegedly fudging accounts of the Nandas.

A case has been registered against the father-son duo, Verma and Shah under various sections of Indian Penal Code and Prevention of Corruption Act.

The arrests came a day after the CBI conducted raids on Suresh Nanda and his associates.

Suresh Nanda was alleged to be a middleman in the deal involving the purchase of Barak Anti-Missile System from Israel. The deal is being investigated by the CBI.

Nanda however, denies any wrongdoing or having received any kickbacks in any of the deals.

The government had on March 3 suspended the passport of Suresh Nanda by four more weeks pending a decision on CBI's plea for revocation of his travel document.

The Centre had on January 30 suspended the passport of Nanda, son of former Naval Chief S M Nanda, for four weeks, which expired today.

Sanjeev Nanda is also the key accused in the BMW hit and run case.
