Agencies

New Delhi, Mar 8: The Congress party will kickstart its campaign on Sunday for the series of elections lined up with a grand rally here in which it will seek to hard sell the farm loan waiver. The `Kisan Rally', to be addressed by party chief Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, is being billed to be a grand affair and will be followed by similar exercises in the states.

The rally at Ramlila Maidan will be attended by farmers from northern states like Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh besides Delhi. Congress leaders say that the party Chief Ministers and PCC chiefs are also expected to attend the rally. DPCC chief J P Aggarwal said the rally will exclusively focus on the benefits doled out by the UPA government through the recent budgets suggesting that the Congress party is with and for the common man.

AICC spokesperson Jayanti Natrajan said a meeting of the PCC chiefs and CLP leaders has been called on March ten to decide upon state-level conventions and rallies to reach out to the people, especially farmers. Conventions on tribal rights are also being organised in Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chattisgarh, Jharkhand, Karnataka and Orissa. The party is also expected to prepare booklets on the budget in order to explain to the people the salient points of its pro-poor and pro-farmer measures.
