Bhopal's sanitation
appalling |
| As part of their Quality of Life report, 2007, Mercer ranks cities based on levels of air pollution, waste management, water potability, hospital supplies, medical services and the presence of infectious diseases. Delhi scored a depressing 46.6 on the health and sanitation index.
As was expected, the high and mighty of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi strongly denied the charge and instead blamed the multiplicity of organizations for whatever mess was there. The saying goes, " A bad workman quarrels with his tools". So what if the Delhi Mayor blames this and that for the mess that Delhi is in.
One wonders where will Bhopal stand in Mercer's ranking? Going by the deplorable state of sanitation, ubiquitous littering, poor waste management, high levels of pollution, lack of availability of potable water, indifferent slum management, negligible care of most open spaces and paucity of public conveniences, Bhopal is not expected to fare any better. But who cares? The BMC can always pass on the blame to the State and the Central Governments for not providing sufficient funds.
