M'rashtra Governor set to quit

Agencies

Bangalore, Mar 5: Ending months of speculations, Maharashtra Governor S M Krishna is all set to resign from his gubernatorial post on Wednesday evening and return to active politics in Karnataka where Assembly election are likely in May.

Krishna, who is in New Delhi, will call on President Pratibha Patil at Rashtrapati Bhavan at 6.45 pm and submit his resignation, sources close to Krishna said. Krishna, who was in Bangalore on Tuesday, was summoned by Congress President Sonia Gandhi to Delhi, where she asked him to quit the governor's post and return to Karnataka to lead Congress in the coming elections.

Gandhi had a two-hour-long discussion with Krishna on the political situation in Karnataka and cleared his return to state politics. The Election Commission has said that it will take a decision on the Karnataka polls by April 15. The former Karnataka chief minister was appointed Maharashtra Governor in 2004 but the IT savvy leader was uncomfortable in the post and had been expressing his desire to relinquish it for the past several months.
