Sensex down 240 pts, closes at 17579  

Mumbai, Feb 29:
The budget 2008-09 gave mixed signals to markets but the proposal to hike the short-term capital gains tax did not go down well as the benchmark Sensex dipped by more than 240 points on Friday.
 
Gold, silver touches new peak  

Mumbai, Feb 29:
Safe-haven buying pushed up gold to Rs 12,525 per 10 gram and silver to Rs 24,130 per kg on the bullion market during opening trade triggered by weak bourses after Finance Minister P Chidambaram announced a loan waiver of Rs 60,000 crore for farmers in his budget speech.
 
Hyundai, GM to cut price of small cars  

New Delhi, Feb 29:
Much to the delight of prospective small car buyers, leading manufacturers Hyundai Motor India and General Motors today said they would slash prices by up to Rs 16,000 to pass on benefits from the excise duty cut announced in the Budget.
 
Bank stocks plunge on loan waiver announcement  

Mumbai, Feb 29:
Bank stocks fell 3 per cent to 9,763.90 points in late afternoon trade on Friday after the Finance Minister P Chidambaram announced a loan waiver for farmers.
