Pakistan held the elections to elect a new parliament along with a premier on Feb 18. The opposition parties have secured massive victory, leaving very little seats for PMLQ supporting Presdient Pervez Musharraf. But the elections have reportedly cost the country more than Rs 200 billion, a fact the politicians should remember while fighting for further gains in politics. The irony is that the polls for so-called "democracy" are not going to change anything in the country, while a few would become richer day by day by using the changing climate in the country, no matter who becomes the premier. The real power will remain in the hands of the rich forces that have retained it for most of the past 60 years. They would obtain support from other countries, particularly the West to fulfil their designs. And they would manipulate everything to their own advantages. Politicians should know many Pakistanis have sacrificed their lives in the name of same "democracy' recently and the condition of poor in the country is nothing but pathetic.
Global media have termed the results of Pakistan poll as the vote against President Musharraf, who had long back declared his support to whosoever wins the polls. Musharraf has no party of his own and PMLQ supports him. However, the Western and Pakistan media fail to understand that death of Benazir, as expected, has twisted the poll fate differently that what it could have been otherwise, in the normal circumstances. But the West and opposition always maintained that polls would certainly be rigged by Musharraf regime. Since the opposition parties have won more seats that the otherwise less important Musharraf's supporting party PMLQ, neither the West nor the Pakistan's opposition or their media claim any fraud in the elections. The probable reason being the experience in Indian and USA scenes where even at the last moment the "democratic" results could be changed. If by chance Musharraf's party had won now, in the same way, the opposition would have called the polls totally rigged and fraud. Now they, seemingly shameless people, don't even feel ashamed of raising such an alarm then and don't feel sorry for that now.
On the contrary, the poll verdict is a personal victory for Musharraf for every thing he has done for Pakistan in all domains, including media freedom and new options for electronic media, higher education, etc. He has improved relations with many countries, including India.
