2 killed in Pak election rally blast

Islamabad, Feb 9: At least two persons were killed and five others injured when a bomb went off at an election rally in northwestern Pakistan on Saturday. The blast occurred at a rally near the town of Charsadda that was being addressed by Awami National Party leader Afrasiab Khattak, who escaped without injury. "I am safe but many others are injured," Khattak told reporters. ANP is an ethnic Pashtun party.

The blast sparked panic at the rally. It was not immediately known if a bomb had been planted at the venue or the blast was triggered by a suicide attacker, officials said. The injured were rushed to a nearby hospital. In December last year, 54 people were killed and over 100 injured when a suicide attacker blew himself up in a packed mosque in Charsadda in a bid to target former minister Aftab Ahmed Khan Sherpao.
