| Is it Rama or politics that is getting the better of us?Undoubtedly, jobs will be created but what of the ensuing mess? Saving in time and fuel will be totally off-set by problems of 'navigating the Palk Strait'. Who will use the channel? - (a) certainly not shipping going east to Singapore, (b) Indian shipping may be, but what will be the volume of traffic? Deep draught vessels ( big bulk carriers/tankers) would not like to go through. Imagine the slow pace and pilotage aspects and cost thereof. And above all, what of ship safety - it will be bonanza for pirates and, the saddest part, for the likes of the LTTE!
