Fidayeen threat to Advani

Agencies

New Delhi, Feb 5: The BJP on Tuesday decided to postpone ten public rallies of veteran leader L K Advani, following an increased threat perception to the former Deputy Prime Minister.

The Union Home Ministry had last week reviewed the security of Advani and Narendra Modi after the intelligence inputs suggested that Pakistan's ISI had "tasked" Dawood Ibrahim with a mission to assassinate them.

Speaking to media , BJP leader Sushma Swaraj said, "We have decided to take Home Ministry's advice seriously and have postponed some of the rallies of Advani."

However, the party made it clear that "Sankalp Yatra" by Advani from Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh will go ahead as per plans despite terror threats.

"We will cooperate with the government in whatever steps it would take regarding the security of Advani and Narendra Modi (Gujarat chief minister). But there is no question of Advani avoiding meeting the people and would tour the country during the yatra by road, plane and train," senior BJP leader Venkaiah Naidu told reporters.

He said Advani's two-month-long march will create awareness among the people about the failure of the Congress- led UPA government.

The party, however, did not spell out the reason for postponing Advani's rally in Rampur. "It is not a big thing if the dates of one or two rallies are reworked," Javdekar said.

Advani, whose Somnath to Ayodhya rath yatra brought the party to the centrestage in 1990, was to address a series of rallies across the country as part of his Sankalp Yatra.

The party had announced that he will address rallies in Jabalpur, Rampur, Davangare, Delhi, Ranchi, Varanasi, Lucknow, Baripada, Hyderabad, Chennai, Pune, Rohtak and Jammu from February six to March 23.

''We will cooperate with the government in whatever steps it would take regarding the security of Advani and Narendra Modi (Gujarat chief minister). But there is no question of Advani avoiding meeting the people and would tour the country during the yatra by road, plane and train,'' senior BJP leader Venkaiah Naidu told reporters in Kolkata.

He said Advani's two-month-long march will create awareness among the people about the failure of the Congress-led UPA government.

The Union Home Ministry had last week reviewed the security of Advani and Modi after the intelligence inputs suggested that Pakistan's ISI had ''tasked'' Dawood Ibrahim with a mission to assassinate them.

Naidu said the UPA government was becoming increasingly ''unpopular'' because of its failure on various fronts, including tackling terrorism and spiralling prices.
