Indian
economy is getting strong day by day. To what extent the benefit
of the influence of fast growing economy is reaching the common
man can be an important issue for consideration. According
to a data, last year in 2006-07 the economic growth was 9.6
per cent and recent data tells that per capita income at the
speed 14.2 per cent has reached Rs 29,640. Seeing the global
slowdown these data are favourable. This calculation was made
on the basis of present prices. In earlier finance year it
was Rs 25,956. In these two years if we notice on per capita
income then it shows 14.2 per cent. According to Central Statistical
Organisation this situation has emerged. According to market
experts the increase in GDP is visible due to spurt in sales
of vehicles, mobile phones, branded products. However, it
is a matter of great concern as to how much this hike is helping
the ordinary person. National Sample Organisation's report
tells that 14 crore population (fifth part of rural population)
only earns Rs 12 per day. There is great difference between
urban and rural India. The urban people spend Rs 1171 per
month whereas the villagers spend only Rs 625 per month. A
major part of urban population means 22 per cent people spend
Rs 19 per day. It becomes clear with the report of CSO and
NSSO that a major part of the populace is still deprived from
the benefits of development. Include in this urban poor and
rural poor of India and deprived, marginal farmers and small
farmers. By this way it can be deduced as to what extent the
benefit of economic development is reaching the common man.
Our economy is expanding speedily and Union Finance Minister,
P Chidambaram hopes that this year our country would touch
9 per cent economic growth rate. It is a good sign that to
maintain growth rate we were successful but its benefit should
also reach the common man.
