Personal Thought: Modern distortion in education system

While Central Govt directs policy matters, education is a State subject. Country is vast, population large, languages many; all states find uniformity throughout the country a great exercise but efforts are being attempted.

Brief of school/college and university Education:

Primary education which is a national priority aims universalisation in that for every one born in this ancient country must get primary education. One passes sixth one is primary school pass.

Till one passes eighth one attends middle then ninth, tenth and finishes twelfth in higher secondary. On passing he goes to college/university for a degree course. University provides for degree and post degree education. Tenth and Twelfth are covered by Board examinations.

Distortions with measures:

The system of education as it exists, even at primary to post graduate, has a parallel system of tutorials. There has been an understanding, institutions recognized don't teach as required and as such tutorials supplement. It is this practice, which causes the divide between the rich and poor. Certainly the poor cannot afford tuition fees and are left behind from the beginning to the end. Ultimately generations after generations go on widening the gulf. It is equally true that tutorials confine to texts only to qualify students for examinations while the recognized institutions are responsible for moral, social, physical and all round development of the student.

There are govt. run and private institutions. This distortional system figures in the difference of qualify education. Most of the private are commercialized so much so that sometimes the very teacher employed conducts tutorial. These institutions run from the collections from students and govt. aid. The students never care to attend and yet their attendance to qualify for examination is certified. Many students absenting from classes do all sorts of misbehaviors, which may not find place in Govt run institutions. Moral, physical, social education in private, becomes a casualty resulting in unwanted indiscipline in these students.

There is a full recognition of running co-education in both Govt and non-govt institutions. This is most welcome but as many civilian notices in TV serials, students aiming at earning favour from grown up girls create unhealthy, unsocial and rowdiest situations making institutions unpopular. Discipline as expected is rare to none.

Physical fitness should have been one of the requirements of education but games and physical training are not compulsory subjects, bringing down the future generation fitness to adequately face the rigors of life. Education as advocated by Gandhiji, is the all round development of man's body, mind and sprit. Present system stands nowhere nearer this advice.

Better employment potentials depend mostly on higher education like IITs and IIMs as also medical and engineering. This often goes only to rich who can afford to pay and poor fail to have access, except for few brilliant. Institutions do provide for transport but most students prefer motorcycles, scootors and even four-wheelers. This freedom creates unrest amongst all students who do not afford.

Hostels cater to the needs of some students whose parents live elsewhere. Lack of discipline amongst this class is a cause of concern of the civil life.

Coming to Universities the world is now exposed to varieties of high tech including biotechnology, nanotechnology, robotics, quantum computing, information and communication technology(ICT) and so on and so forth. All these technologies do not find place fully in our universities. These are highly advanced. The combination of many high tech would be necessary to face the problems of climate change (warming of the globe) droughts and floods etc. Ultimately the nation would largely depend on university trained experts. Unless our education system is tuned to high tech, the country may not be able face challenges equally as are faced by other nations. As experts are necessary so are professors and teachers to teach and qualify learners ready to handle the situations.

This is presently corporate or company age and the education system is required to educate required personnel for them.

Nation demands a mosaic of several faculties to equip learners and teachers to promote healthy life, education free from distortions should stand to face the challenges, teachers ratio has to be improved.
